Hopefully we are all happy about the start of the rainy season ontime, either because mother nature was craving for water or we are simply enjoying the lower temperatures. Since it’s cooler outside, we’ve collected some interesting topics about outdoor activities for you.
We are working on some more international maps in the moment and are pretty sure to release them during the coming months. Maps for Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, South Korea, Vietnam and hopefully Japan will enhance your travel experience.
carNAVi is also planning of filing a license agreement to offer maps for the United States, Canada and western Europe. This maps may be available later this year.

Using GPS in hiking is like breadcrumbs along the trail
There are several methods of navigation while hiking: easiest is to just follow the trail blazes or signs; follow the sun; a compass or use a GPS. Yes, you can also leave bread crumbs along the trail but if the birds have their say you will not have a return trail to found.
If you are not following a marked trail you should carry either a compass or a GPS. A secondary reason for a GPS is that it can provide information regarding your distance travelled and the elevations you have climbed. It is still recommended that you carry a trail map or guidebook as a backup and to have an overall view of where you are heading.
Try it out and take your carNAVi off the road next time. Check out this article [1] in our FAQ pages for more information about off-road usage. Track-recording is explained here [2]. After returning home you can transfer the recorded track data to your computer and display the tracks for example in Google Earth.
Geocaching – A new hobby for you and your family
Geocaching is an outdoor activity in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers (called “geocaches” or “caches”) anywhere in the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container (usually a tupperware container or ammo box) containing a logbook. Larger containers can also contain items for trading, usually toys or trinkets of little value.
Geocaching is most often described as a “game of high-tech hide and seek,” sharing many aspects with benchmarking, trigpointing, orienteering, treasure-hunting, Letterboxing, and waymarking. Geocaches are currently placed in over 100 countries around the world and on all seven continents. As of June 2010, there are over 1.1 million active geocaches around the world.

Easy Steps to Geocaching
- Register at one of the Geocaching websites
- Search for a cache near you
- Choose an available geocache
- Enter the coordinates of the geocache into your carNAVi. (see page 31 in your users manual)
- Switch your carNAVi in off-road mode [4]
- Use your GPS device to assist you in finding the hidden geocache.
- Sign the logbook and return the geocache to its original location.
- Share your geocaching stories and photos online.
